You’re interested in becoming a drone pilot, but the process sounds difficult and you’re not sure where to start. Well, we have you covered. Here is your guide to obtaining your Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) in South Africa. There are many industries making use of drones, which means there are many opportunities available to those who have their RPC.

Who benefits from obtaining an RPC?

The Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) is a vital certification within the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operating Certificate (UASOC) framework. This ensures that drone pilots have a baseline understanding of what aeroplane and helicopter pilots do in the surrounding areas and that they are able to act appropriately in case any issues arise.

If you plan to use your drone for any income-generating activity, you are considered a commercial drone pilot and need to get a Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC).

What are the minimum requirements to acquire your RPC:

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You require at least a level 4 English Language proficiency.
  • You require a Class 3 Medical Certificate.

These requirements are not needed to enrol in the course, but they are required to receive your letter of recommendation for the skills test. This means that you are free to obtain your English proficiency and medical certificate during the training period.
